Rio Galeão Enters Latin America’s Top 10 Busiest Airports
Rio Galeão recorded one of the strongest passenger growth rates in Latin America in 2025. The airport welcomed 8.7 million travelers during the year and entered the region’s top 10 busiest airports ranking for the first time in years.
According to the Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC), Galeão ranked 10th among the busiest airports in the region. Passenger traffic increased 23.6% between 2024 and 2025, reinforcing the airport’s strategic role for tourism and international connectivity in Rio de Janeiro.
Rio Galeão Records Strong Passenger Growth
Galeão’s recovery marks an important moment for Rio de Janeiro’s aviation sector. The airport had struggled for years with reduced traffic and competition from other Brazilian hubs.
The 23.6% increase in passenger volume now places Galeão among the fastest-growing airports in the ACI-LAC ranking.
The airport handled 8.7 million passengers in 2025, benefiting from stronger tourism demand, additional routes and higher international travel activity.
Brazil Dominates the Latin American Airport Ranking
Brazil placed three airports inside Latin America’s top 10 busiest terminals in 2025.
São Paulo-Guarulhos led the regional ranking with more than 23.1 million passengers. Congonhas Airport ranked seventh with approximately 11.9 million travelers.
Galeão completed the Brazilian presence in the ranking and reinforced Rio de Janeiro’s importance as one of the country’s main tourism gateways.
New Investments Could Transform Galeão
Galeão’s growth arrives during a new phase for the airport concession. Spanish airport operator Aena won the assisted sale auction in March with a bid of R$ 2.9 billion.
The agreement aims to secure the airport concession until 2039 while preserving previous investments and supporting future operational improvements.
Local authorities see Galeão’s recovery as essential for expanding international tourism and attracting additional long-haul flights to Rio de Janeiro.
The airport also plays a central role in the city’s strategy to host more international events and strengthen global connectivity.
Brazil’s Aviation Sector Continues to Expand
Passenger growth at Galeão reflects a broader expansion across Brazil’s aviation market.
Public infrastructure investments reached R$ 549.5 million in 2024. Private airport investments totaled R$ 3.38 billion during the same period.
Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports said infrastructure projects improve passenger services, increase operational safety and support economic growth.
Air travel demand also continued to rise across the country. More than 34 million passengers used domestic and international flights in the first quarter of 2026.
That figure represented a 9.52% increase compared with the same period in 2025.
International Travel to Brazil Keeps Rising
International passenger traffic grew strongly during the first months of 2026. Brazilian airports handled more than 8.3 million international travelers between January and March.
International traffic increased 13.2% year over year, while domestic traffic grew 8.35% and surpassed 25.7 million passengers.
These numbers highlight the growing demand for travel to Brazil and reinforce Rio de Janeiro’s position as one of the country’s main entry points for international visitors.
