Comida di Buteco 2026: Rio’s Famous Bar Food Festival Returns in April

Рио-де-Жанейро is preparing for one of the city’s most popular gastronomic events. The 2026 edition of the famous Comida di Buteco competition will once again bring together dozens of traditional bars and restaurants across the metropolitan region.
For a full month, locals and visitors will explore the city’s classic botecos while tasting exclusive snacks created especially for the competition.
A Month Dedicated to Rio’s Traditional Bars
The 19th edition of Comida di Buteco will take place between April 10 and May 10, 2026 in Rio de Janeiro and the surrounding metropolitan area.
Bars from the capital, the Baixada Fluminense and Niterói will participate in the competition. Each establishment will create a unique snack for the event, allowing visitors to discover new flavors and traditional Brazilian bar cuisine.
The festival celebrates the culture of the boteco, a type of informal bar that plays an important role in Brazilian social life. These small establishments are known for their relaxed atmosphere, cold drinks and creative snacks shared among friends.
Vegetables Take Center Stage in 2026
Each year, the competition highlights a specific ingredient. In 2026, the chosen theme is vegetables.
Participating bars must include vegetables as the main ingredient or as a central element of their dishes. As a result, chefs and bar owners are creating inventive recipes that combine traditional flavors with fresh ingredients.
Despite the creativity of the dishes, the price remains standardized. Every snack will cost R$40 across the country during the festival, allowing visitors to try different bars without large price differences.
How the Competition Works
The contest evaluates bars through a combination of public votes and expert judges. Visitors who taste the snacks can vote for their favorite establishments, while judges evaluate several criteria.
They consider the flavor of the snack, the quality of the service, the temperature of the drinks and the hygiene of the venue. Together, these elements determine the final ranking.
In the Rio region, the competition will award three main titles: the best bar in Rio de Janeiro, the best bar in Baixada Fluminense and the best bar in Niterói.
Local winners will then compete at the national level for the title of Brazil’s best boteco.
A Celebration of Brazilian Food Culture
Since its creation in 2000, Comida di Buteco has become one of the most recognized food competitions in Brazil.
The goal of the event is not only to select the best snacks but also to celebrate the cultural importance of neighborhood bars. These venues often serve as meeting points for communities and reflect the creativity of Brazilian popular cuisine.
For visitors, the festival offers an authentic way to explore Rio beyond its famous beaches and landmarks.
Discovering Rio Through Its Botecos
During the competition, many locals travel across the city to try different snacks and support their favorite bars. This creates a lively atmosphere in neighborhoods throughout the metropolitan area.
For tourists visiting Rio de Janeiro in April and May, the festival provides a unique opportunity to experience local food culture and discover traditional botecos that might otherwise remain hidden.
From creative appetizers to classic Brazilian flavors, Comida di Buteco continues to highlight the vibrant culinary identity of the city.
